Start Sharp Betting: How to Reach Sharp Bookmakers and Exchanges

The short answer

Sharp betting means betting at the most accurate prices in the market, and sharp betting sportsbooks are where those prices sit: bookmakers and exchanges that take large stakes on thin margins. Pinnacle, Sbobet and Singbet are the Asian bookmakers bettors use for this, and Betfair Exchange and Orbit Exchange are the exchanges. A soft bookmaker earns from customers who lose and cuts back the ones who win; a sharp one lives on volume and a thin margin. AsianConnect, BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket each reach Pinnacle, Betfair Exchange and Orbit Exchange through their platforms. Below we set out the difference, how sharp bettors work, how access works and what models can and cannot do.

What makes a bookmaker sharp, and what sharp betting means

Sharp describes a price and an operator, not a clever bettor. A sharp bettor is simply someone who takes the price where it is most accurate, and sharp lines are the odds that an operator of that kind posts. The opposite is a soft bookmaker, with a wide margin, a recreational customer base and a habit of cutting the stakes of accounts that win, a pattern our page on account limits explained follows step by step.

If you read American guides, sportsbook is just their word for bookmaker, and the search you typed to get here means the same thing. We say bookmaker from now on. What makes an operator sharp is the way it earns its living, not how it looks on the screen: two sites can share a design and sit at opposite ends of the market.

Sharp bookmakers, soft bookmakers and exchanges

Three kinds of operator, three ways of arriving at a price. The table below sets them side by side.

A sharp price. Not a winning one.

The odds being fair says nothing about the bet you place at them, and that is the point to hold on to through the rest of this page. Given the choice, we take the smaller bet at the sharp price over the bigger one at a soft bookmaker, because a large stake at a soft bookmaker buys a worse price and invites a trimmed stake the next time round.

Where sharp prices come from

Among the bookmakers, Pinnacle and Sbobet are the two established names, and Singbet stands beside them. Thin margins. Heavy turnover. Our guides to betting on Pinnacle and the Sbobet guide cover how you place a bet at each, and the gap in margin between this end of the market and the high street is worked through with invented numbers in how to compare margins.

Among the exchanges, Betfair Exchange and Orbit Exchange take the same role from a different direction. There the price is the money that other bettors offer at each set of odds, and the exchange charges a commission on net winnings. The page on exchange betting explains back and lay, and Betfair Exchange access shows the way in through a broker.

As a general pattern, the price moves first where the large stakes land, and the other bookmakers then adjust their own. It is a pattern, not a rule for every match or every market.

The name of the platform changes with the broker while the operator stays the same, so Pinnacle is PS3838 at one door and Probet42 at another. Do not let the name put you off: the operator underneath is the one you came for.

How sharp bettors work

We are talking about choosing a price here, not about a method for winning. Same match, several prices, and the habit that matters is knowing which one you are taking and why. Four steps cover it.

  1. Compare the price

The BLACK bet slip at BetInAsia shows the odds and limits of every connected bookmaker and exchange. Edge at MadMarket shows the average price, the best price and the maximum stake in Total, Average & Best. The Sportmarket betslip shows which bookmakers can cover your stake in full or in part.

  2. Read the maximum before the stake

The maximum belongs to the operator and the market, and the slip shows it before you commit. A bet that looks right at the price still has to fit under the figure on the screen.

  3. Set the closing price beside yours

The closing price is the last one posted before the event starts. Put the price you took next to it as a gauge of the price you got, never as a result: it says nothing about this week's outcome.

  4. Keep a record

BLACK has Orders, Accounting and Analytics, with reports by bookmaker and competition that cover the number of bets, stake, turnover, result and ROI. Asianodds88 at AsianConnect has Bet Tracking and Analysis, and Edge lists Price History.

A price that moves after your bet is not a verdict on it. Prices move for reasons that have nothing to do with you, and a bettor who reads every move as a judgement soon stops enjoying the bet.

Arbitrage is a different trade, and we cover it in how arbitrage betting works.

Reaching sharp bookmakers through a broker

A broker is one account that reaches the sharp end of the market. You register, fund your balance at the broker, open the platform account, and the platform places the bet at the operator. The table shows the platform you use at each sharp venue, and bookmaker access explained carries the full matrix.

For a single Pinnacle line, any of the four does the job, and the choice rests on the wallet and the screen you like. AsianConnect at a glance, BetInAsia and BLACK, MadMarket and Edge and Sportmarket features each set out what you get. Edge puts sharp odds from Asian bookmakers and exchanges on one screen.

What data mining and models can and cannot do

Data mining here means searching past results and odds for regularities, using them to estimate the chance of an outcome, and setting that estimate against the price on offer. The gap between your estimate and the price is the only thing that matters, and four limits stand in the way.

  • The price already holds the work. A sharp price comes from heavy volume, so your estimate faces a number that many people have already worked on.
  • The margin comes first. At a bookmaker your estimate has to beat the price plus the margin, and at an exchange the price plus the commission.
  • Overfitting. A model tuned until it explains the past fits the past, and the next matches are different.
  • A short run proves little. A short run of results cannot separate a good model from a good run of luck.

What a model does not do is pick winners or promise anything. No promises. Not here, not anywhere. What it does do is put order in your own betting: the price you took against the closing price, bet after bet, in a record you can read.

A betting record beats memory, since memory keeps the bets that went well and quietly drops the rest. We treat a model as a way of asking a better question, never as a forecast, and we would rather ask it of our own bets than of anyone else's.

The limits of sharp betting

A sharp price lowers the cost of a bet, not the chance of losing it, and a run of losses reaches everyone who bets. We worry less about the price than about that run, because the price is something you can check and the run is something you have to sit through.

Every operator sets its own maximum, market by market, so a stake that fits one market can be too big for the next.

All four brokers can ask for a proof of identity and a proof of address at any time, and each allows one account per person, so keep your documents to hand. Our page on KYC for betting brokers sets out what the checks involve.

AsianConnect, BetInAsia and MadMarket write personal, non-commercial use into their terms. Sharp betting here is a way of choosing where to place a bet, nothing more. Our betting strategy guides take the other topics one at a time.

Questions people ask

What does a sharp sportsbook mean?

A sharp sportsbook is a bookmaker whose prices sit closest to the true chance of a result, because it takes large stakes on a thin margin. Sharp betting sportsbooks and soft ones form a scale, not two fixed boxes: the word describes how an operator earns its living, and some operators lean further towards the sharp end than others.

What sportsbook do sharp bettors use?

Pinnacle and Sbobet among the bookmakers, Betfair Exchange and Orbit Exchange among the exchanges. Pinnacle, Betfair Exchange and Orbit Exchange come through all four brokers, and Sbobet comes through BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket. Our page on which operators each broker reaches shows the platform you use at each one.

How big a bet does a sharp bookmaker take?

A sharp bookmaker is built for large stakes on a thin margin, but it sets the maximum itself, market by market. The platform screen shows that figure before you stake. Read the maximum first, then size the bet to fit under it, whichever market you are in.

Are betting exchanges sharp?

Yes, in the sense that matters: the price comes from the money other bettors offer, not from a trader's opinion. An exchange charges a commission on net winnings, and the stake you can place depends on the money waiting at that price, which bettors call depth. Where depth is thin, only a small bet is matched at the odds you see.

Does data mining help you win at sports betting?

Not on its own. The useful job for it is analysing your own bets, meaning the price you took against the closing price, across many bets. A model that looks good on past results can fail on the next ones, because the matches ahead are not the matches behind. Treat the output as a question, not an answer.
