Choose a Betting Strategy: Sharp Betting, Arbitrage and Long-Term Betting

The short answer

Betting strategies come down to three questions: where the price is sharpest, whether two prices leave a gap, and how to keep a long run of bets in order. Our guides take them one at a time, as sharp betting, arbitrage betting and long-term betting. A broker changes the practical side of each. At all four brokers one account reaches Pinnacle, Betfair Exchange and Orbit Exchange, and one funded account sits behind them. None of the three promises a result. We would start with sharp betting, because a good price helps whichever method you choose.

The three guides

Three guides. Three questions. Each stands alone, and each says what a broker adds.

Sharp betting: where is the price most accurate?

Sharp betting means taking the price where the market is most accurate: Pinnacle among the bookmakers, Betfair Exchange and Orbit Exchange among the betting exchanges. The guide sets a sharp bookmaker beside a soft one and says what data models do and do not do for you.

Arbitrage betting: is there a gap between two prices?

Playing every outcome of one event at the best price each operator offers is arbitrage betting with a broker. The guide works an example in decimal odds, shows where the sum slips (a price that moves, a leg that is refused) and presents the tools built into the brokers. Bettors call it arbing; the word is quicker than the sum.

Long-term betting: how do you keep a long run of bets in order?

Our guide on long-term betting explained covers the habits around a long run of bets: sizing stakes to a bankroll, writing down every bet, setting the price you took beside the closing price. It quotes no returns.

What a broker changes for each approach

If a broker is new to you, start with betting brokers for beginners. The table sets out what each approach needs and what a broker adds.

What each approach needs and what a broker adds
ApproachWhat it needsWhat a broker adds
Sharp bettingA price from an operator built for volume, and a way to compare it with other pricesAt all four brokers one account reaches Pinnacle, Betfair Exchange and Orbit Exchange. BLACK, Edge and the Sportmarket betslip set several prices side by side.
Arbitrage bettingTwo operators, two prices and money at bothOne funded account covers both legs at the operators the broker connects. BLACK and the Sportmarket betslip have an Arb Calculator that works out the cover for a bet placed elsewhere.
Long-term bettingA record of every bet, and stakes sized to a bankrollAsianodds88 at AsianConnect has Bet Tracking and Analysis, and BLACK at BetInAsia has Orders, Accounting and Analytics.

Where to start

  1. Learn to read a price

A decimal price carries a margin, and the margin sets what a bet costs you before kick-off. Use compare bookmaker odds to see the margin, and Asian handicap explained for the handicap lines, with examples.

  2. Choose the guide by your question

Price first. Method second. If you want to know where the price is sharpest, read the sharp betting guide; if two operators disagree on one match and you want to see whether the gap survives both legs, read the arbitrage guide; if your records are a mess, read the long-term guide, because its habits apply to every bet you place.

  3. Expect restrictions at regular bookmakers

A regular bookmaker tends to cut back the stakes of accounts that win. How account restrictions work follows the stages one by one.

Whichever you pick, write the bets down. A note on your phone beats a spreadsheet you never open.

What none of them promises

No guide here promises a result. A sharp price lowers the cost of a bet, an arbitrage gap can close before the second leg is placed, and a record shows what happened without changing it.

Nothing removes the chance of losing.

Every operator sets its own maximum, market by market. AsianConnect, BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket can each ask for a proof of identity and a proof of address at any time, so keep your documents to hand; broker KYC checks sets out what they involve. AsianConnect, BetInAsia and MadMarket write personal, non-commercial use into their terms, so the guides talk about your bets and nothing wider. Same warning, every guide.

Questions people ask

What is the best betting strategy?

There is no single best one, because each approach answers a different question. Judge any method by what you can check yourself: the price you took against the closing price, over many bets, says more than a claimed return. A method you cannot measure that way is a story, not a strategy.

Do betting strategies actually work?

They work on the cost of a bet, not on the result. A sharp price lowers what a bet costs you. A run of losses reaches everyone who bets, whichever method they follow.

Do I need a betting broker to follow these strategies?

No, a strategy is a way of choosing bets and does not depend on a broker. A broker earns its place where the operator matters: Pinnacle and the exchanges come through all four brokers, and one funded account covers both legs of an arbitrage. For long-term betting it adds the history screens inside the platform.
