How Asian Handicap Betting Works: Every Line With Examples
The short answer
Asian handicap betting is a football market where one team starts with a virtual head start, so the draw disappears or splits. You back a team at a line such as -0.5, 0 or +0.75, add that line to its final goals and compare the total with the opponent's goals. A higher total wins, a level total returns the stake, and a quarter line settles half the stake on each of two neighbouring lines. Below we work through every common line with decimal odds, then show where AsianConnect, BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket carry the market.
What Asian handicap betting is
The line is a head start of whole, half or quarter goals, and the market has two outcomes: the team you back gets past it or it does not. A minus sign means the team gives goals away (the favourite, in most matches); a plus sign means it receives them. (We use football for every example, because goals are easy to count.)
A line is a price, not a prediction. Choosing one answers "by how much", never "who". Every broker we cover reaches bookmakers from Asia that list them.
How to read a handicap line
Add the line to the final goals of the team you back, then compare the result with the other team's goals. Team A at -1.5 wins 2-0: 2 - 1.5 = 0.5, against 0, so the bet wins. At 1-0, 1 - 1.5 = -0.5 and the bet loses. Team B at +1 loses 1-2: 1 + 1 = 2, level with A's 2, so the stake comes back (return 100, profit 0).
A whole line (0, 1, 2) can finish level, and then it refunds. A line ending in .5 cannot, so it never does. A line ending in .25 or .75 splits the stake. A 100 stake at 1.90 settles five ways.
- Win. 100 x 1.90 = 190 back, profit 90.
- Half win. Halves of 50 return 95 and 50: return 145, profit 45.
- Refund. Return 100, profit 0.
- Half loss. One half refunded, one lost: return 50, loss 50.
- Loss. Return 0, loss 100.
Five outcomes. That is all.
PS3838 at Sportmarket and Probet42 at MadMarket both let you switch to Hong Kong odds, which are the decimal price minus 1 (1.90 reads as 0.90).
Every line and what it pays
| Line | Wins by 2 or more | Wins by 1 | Draw | Loses by 1 | Loses by 2 or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| -1.5 | Win | Loss | Loss | Loss | Loss |
| -1 | Win | Refund | Loss | Loss | Loss |
| -0.75 | Win | Half win | Loss | Loss | Loss |
| -0.5 | Win | Win | Loss | Loss | Loss |
| -0.25 | Win | Win | Half loss | Loss | Loss |
| 0 | Win | Win | Refund | Loss | Loss |
| +0.25 | Win | Win | Half win | Loss | Loss |
| +0.5 | Win | Win | Win | Loss | Loss |
| +0.75 | Win | Win | Win | Half loss | Loss |
| +1 | Win | Win | Win | Refund | Loss |
| +1.5 | Win | Win | Win | Win | Loss |
The other side of a line reverses the outcomes: Win and Loss swap, Half win and Half loss swap, Refund stays Refund. Team A at -0.75 winning by one goal gets a Half win, so Team B at +0.75 losing by one goal gets a Half loss.
We would learn the whole and half lines first; a quarter line adds a step but no new idea.
Quarter lines: how the stake splits
A line ending in .25 or .75 is two bets of half the stake on the two neighbouring lines. So -0.75 is -0.5 plus -1.
Show the steps as a list
- Bet on a quarter line: for example -0.75
- In parallel:
- Half the stake: on the -0.5 line
- Half the stake: on the -1 line
- Each half settles alone: win, refund or loss
- The two results add up: win, half win, half loss or loss
Pick the line and the price
Team A at -0.75 at 2.10, stake 100. A winning half returns 50 x 2.10 = 105, which is profit 55.
Split the stake
50 goes on -0.5 and 50 goes on -1.
Settle each half on its own line
A wins by two goals or more, say 3-1: both halves win, 105 each. A wins by one goal, say 2-1: the -0.5 half wins (105) and the -1 half is refunded (50). In a draw or a defeat both halves lose.
Add the halves
The return is 210, 155 or 0: profit 110, profit 55 (a Half win) or loss 100.
The same pattern covers every other quarter line: 1.25 is 1 and 1.5, and 1.75 is 1.5 and 2. Settle each half against the grid and add the results. On Team A, -1.25 wins by two goals or more, half loses on a one-goal win and loses otherwise; +1.75 wins on a defeat by one goal or better, half loses on a defeat by two and loses by three or more; -2 wins by three or more, refunds a two-goal win and loses otherwise.
Asian handicap, European handicap and 1X2
1X2 has three outcomes (home, draw, away), and the draw is one you back. Nothing is refunded.
A European handicap, also called a three-way handicap, gives the same head start but keeps three outcomes. At A -1, a win by two goals or more is the "A -1" outcome, a win by exactly one goal is the "draw" outcome (a one-goal win, not a level score) and anything else is "B +1". BLACK lists Three-Way Handicap among its football markets. In Asian handicap that one-goal win at -1 is a refund.
Line 0 is a draw no bet: a draw refunds, otherwise the team you back wins or loses.
We start with the Asian version: two outcomes and no draw to chase.
Asian totals work the same way
Over and Under totals split like handicap lines. A total of 2.75 is 2.5 and 3 (50 on each), and 2.25 is 2 and 2.5. A whole total such as 2 refunds both sides when the match ends on exactly 2 goals. BLACK lists these markets as Asian Total.
| Goals in the match | Over 2.75 | Under 2.75 |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or fewer | Loss, loss 100 | Win, profit 90 |
| Exactly 3 | Half win, profit 45 | Half loss, loss 50 |
| 4 or more | Win, profit 90 | Loss, loss 100 |
Where to place Asian handicap bets through a broker
A betting broker puts one account in front of Asian bookmakers and exchanges that list these lines. To bet on Pinnacle through a broker you use PS3838 at AsianConnect and BetInAsia, Probet42 at MadMarket and PS3838 again at Sportmarket. Sbobet is reached through BLACK at BetInAsia, Edge at MadMarket and the Sportmarket platform; Sbobet and brokers has the detail.
- AsianConnect. Asian handicaps and over/unders are among its listed bet types, and Asianodds88 covers Live Asian Handicap. See AsianConnect and its bookmakers.
- BetInAsia. BLACK lists Asian Handicap and Asian Total for most sports, and PS3838 lists Handicap. Here is Asian handicap on BLACK.
- MadMarket. Edge lists Asian Handicap, 1x2 and Over/Under, and Probet42 carries Asian Handicap among its thousands of markets. Read Asian handicap on Edge.
- Sportmarket. The platform lists Match Odds (1X2), Over/Under and Handicap, and the PS3838 Direct Bookmaker Account lists Asian Handicap. See what Sportmarket offers.
Prices on the same line differ between operators, and the broker screens put them side by side: the Bet-Slip in BLACK shows the odds and limits of every connected bookmaker and exchange, Total, Average & Best in Edge the average and highest price with the maximum stake, and the Trade view at Sportmarket prices from different bookmakers. Our page on comparing prices on the same line covers margins, what sharp betting is explains why Pinnacle and Sbobet come first (they are the sharp names), and bookmaker access through brokers lists the rest.
For the sums, AsianConnect has a Payout Calculator & Odds Converter, BetInAsia an Asian Handicap calculator and MadMarket one among its free tools. We would compare the same line on two screens before staking, and choose the broker by the screen, not by the logo.
Questions people ask
What does a +0.25 Asian handicap mean?
It sits halfway between 0 and +0.5, so half the stake goes on each. Team B +0.25 at 1.90, stake 100: a B win returns 190 (profit 90), a draw returns 145 (profit 45, a Half win) and a B defeat loses 100.
What does a +1.5 Asian handicap mean?
The team you back starts a goal and a half ahead, so the bet wins unless that team loses by two goals or more. Team B +1.5 at 1.90, stake 100: a 0-1 defeat returns 190 (profit 90) and a 0-2 defeat loses 100. Nothing is refunded on a .5 line, and Team A -1.5 needs a win by two or more.
What happens if the match ends on the line?
On a whole line the stake comes back; on a quarter line the half sitting on the whole line does. Team A -1 winning 3-2 returns 100, profit 0. The same score on -0.75 at 1.90 returns 145, profit 45: the -0.5 half wins (95) and the -1 half is refunded (50). The operator's rules for the market set which score counts: Sharp Exchange shows them behind the i icon.
Is Asian handicap better than 1X2?
No, they answer different questions. 1X2 asks who wins or whether it is a draw, while a handicap line asks by how much. The draw can be backed on 1X2 and on a European handicap, never on an Asian line. We pick a line when the margin matters more than the result.
Can you bet Asian handicap on an exchange?
Yes. Sharp Exchange lists Asian Handicap among its markets, and BetInAsia and MadMarket both reach it. On an exchange you can also lay a line, which means betting against it: a lay of Team A -0.5 wins when A draws or loses. See laying a line on an exchange.
