Betting Brokers Explained: How They Work and Why Bettors Use Them

The short answer

A betting broker gives you one account that reaches many bookmakers and betting exchanges, so you can bet at operators such as Pinnacle or Betfair without opening an account at each. You deposit once with the broker, and its platform places your bets for you. Those operators price for professional volume, which means sharper odds and higher limits than a high street site offers. AsianConnect, BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket are the four brokers we cover, and they differ in platforms, payment methods and the operators they reach. The sections below show how it works and how to pick one.

What is a betting broker?

A broker is the middleman between you and the bookmakers you would rather be betting with. You open one account with it, fund it, and place bets at Asian bookmakers and betting exchanges through the broker's own platform; the broker holds the balance, keeps the records and settles with each operator on your behalf.

The bookmakers most of us start with are built to take small bets from customers who lose. Win steadily and the stake shrinks, then the account closes. Asian bookmakers and exchanges are built the other way round (Pinnacle and Betfair are the names to know). They live on volume and thin margins, so they take far bigger bets, and a broker is how you get an account there. Not a loophole. Just a different door.

The word agent has a second meaning, a salesperson who signs up customers for an operator, and that is a different job from the one described here, done for operators rather than for bettors, and not one this site covers.

The diagram shows the shape of it: one account on one side, a spread of operators on the other.

How a broker works

Whatever the platform is called, the path is the same five moves.

  1. Register

Open the account on the broker's own site with your name and email address. It is yours alone.

  2. Fund the wallet

Deposit with the broker, not with any bookmaker, by one of its payment methods.

  3. Choose a platform

AsianConnect shows one wallet balance shared by every connected bookmaker. At BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket you transfer money from the wallet to the platform account you want to bet on (Sportmarket calls the two accounts Main and Betting).

  4. Place the bet

Pick the market on the broker's platform, which lines up the connected bookmakers and exchanges side by side. On BLACK, BetInAsia's platform, the bet slip shows the odds and limits of every connected operator before you stake.

  5. Withdraw

Withdrawals go through the broker too, not through the bookmaker.

Here is that path drawn out, from your stake to a placed bet.

Broker, bookmaker or exchange?

People mix the three up, so here they are apart. Three things, three jobs. A bookmaker sets a price and takes your bet against it (the margin is its built-in cut of every price). An exchange matches you with other bettors and takes commission on what you win. A broker does neither; it is the door to both.

Exchanges are worth a page of their own, and exchange betting explains back and lay from scratch. What matters here is that a broker puts exchange prices on the same screen as the bookmakers. BetInAsia's BLACK, for one, lists Matchbook, Betdaq and Polymarket next to the Asian bookmakers.

How brokers make money

On turnover. AsianConnect's business runs on turnover, and BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket take commission on the turnover their customers generate. A bet that loses counts toward it exactly as one that wins. Simple as that.

The one place commission touches your own bet is the exchange. An exchange takes its commission from your net winnings on a market, and at BLACK and on Sportmarket's platform it is already folded into the price you are shown, so the broker's income and the exchange's commission are two separate things.

What a broker gives you

  • Higher limits. Pinnacle, Sbobet and the exchanges are built for professional volume, so they take stakes a high street bookmaker will not, and a broker gives you one account from which to use all of them, which is the whole reason serious bettors bother with the extra step. Our page on betting with no limits goes into the detail.
  • Sharper prices. Asian bookmakers run thin margins, and an exchange prices off other bettors instead of a trader's opinion.
  • Several operators, one account. You compare prices across the grid and bet at the best one.
  • Tools built for volume. BLACK and Edge both carry betting analytics (Edge keeps price history too), which a high street app has never had to bother with.

Which bookmakers and exchanges you can reach

Every broker reaches a different set of operators, and each gives its platforms its own names. Pinnacle is the common ground: PS3838 at AsianConnect and BetInAsia, Probet42 at MadMarket, PS3838 again at Sportmarket. Past that the grids diverge, which is the reason to read the table before you register anywhere. Table 1 shows the platform you use at seven of the main operators (the access page has the rest).

What to know before you start

Identity checks

Every broker asks you to prove your identity with a photo ID and proof of address (a passport or ID card, plus a recent utility bill or bank statement). Broker KYC checks go through what each one wants.

Payments

AsianConnect, BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket all take crypto. AsianConnect, BetInAsia and Sportmarket take Skrill and Neteller as well. Cards work at BetInAsia, MadMarket and Sportmarket, and bank transfer at BetInAsia and Sportmarket. If you bet with coins, our page on betting with crypto covers it. Match the broker to the way you already pay.

Platforms

Each broker has its own platform, so you learn the broker's software, not the bookmaker's. That is worth weighing when you compare brokers: the platform is where you spend your time, and where the prices from every connected operator land on one screen. AsianConnect, BetInAsia and MadMarket each run several, and Table 1 names the ones that reach each operator.

One person, one account

Every broker limits you to one account per person, and AsianConnect, BetInAsia and MadMarket write personal, non-commercial use into their terms.

Are betting brokers legal?

A broker is a service, and the law that matters is the one where you live. Rules on online betting differ from country to country, and a broker cannot change them for you, so use one only where betting online is allowed for you and where the operators you want to bet at accept you. BetInAsia and Sportmarket each publish a list of countries they do not accept; ours are set out on the pages for BetInAsia restricted countries and Sportmarket restricted countries.

Who uses betting brokers?

Three kinds of bettor keep coming back.

Sharp bettors want the best price on every bet and an operator that does not flinch at the stake, so they bet at Pinnacle, Sbobet and the exchanges, and a broker is the one account that reaches all of them.

Limited bettors have been cut back by the bookmakers they started with (a familiar story for anyone who wins) and need somewhere to put the same bets.

Arbitrage bettors back both sides of one event at different operators, so the result is the same either way. BLACK and Sportmarket's platform both include an arb calculator for that, and MadMarket lists arbitrage bets as accepted. Our page on arbitrage betting shows how it works through a broker.

Beyond those three, recreational bettors use brokers too. BetInAsia describes BLACK as open to professional bettors and recreational players alike.

How to choose a broker

Start from the operators. Find the bookmakers and exchanges you want in Table 1, and the brokers that list them are your shortlist. Then weigh three things: the platform you will spend your time in, the ways you can pay in and out, and the tools that suit the bets you place.

We start with AsianConnect when one shared wallet matters more, and with BetInAsia when exchange prices matter most. We pick MadMarket when we want Edge on screen (price history and analytics included). Sportmarket is where we go for Betfair and Orbit prices through FairExchange on its own platform. Four cards follow, each with the platforms that broker gives you and a link to its full review.

AsianConnect

Four platforms, PS3838, Piwi247, Asianodds88 and OrbitX, with one wallet balance shared across them.

BetInAsia

BLACK connects many exchanges to the Asian bookmakers, PS3838 gives you Pinnacle, and SharpX is the third platform.

MadMarket

Edge reaches the Asian bookmakers and exchanges, Probet42 is its Pinnacle alternative, and Sharp Exchange is its exchange platform.

Questions people ask

Do brokers earn money?

Yes. A broker takes commission on turnover, the total amount bet through its platform, so its income follows how much you bet and not how you do.

Is sports arbitrage illegal?

No. Where betting itself is legal, arbitrage is too. It is a way of staking, not a trick played on anyone, and the only party that objects is the bookmaker, which is why arbitrage bettors tend to end up at brokers. The method is explained under "Who uses betting brokers?" above.

What is the point of having a broker?

Access. A broker puts Asian bookmakers and exchanges, which price for professionals and take large stakes, within reach of one account. The rest is convenience: one deposit, one login and one identity check instead of one of each at every operator.

What is a broker vs a trader?

Different jobs, and nothing to do with the stock market. A betting broker is the intermediary that holds your account and places your bets. A trader is a bettor who buys and sells positions on a market, often on an exchange. Traders work on broker platforms: BLACK at BetInAsia and Edge at MadMarket both call themselves sports trading platforms.

Is a broker the same as a betting agent?

In betting, yes: a betting agent is another name for a broker, and some brokers use it for themselves. The other meaning, a salesperson who signs up customers for an operator, is a different job.

Do I need a broker for Pinnacle?

Yes, if you want Pinnacle prices from an account that also reaches the rest of the grid. Table 1 lists Pinnacle at all four brokers: PS3838 at AsianConnect and BetInAsia, Probet42 at MadMarket, and PS3838 again at Sportmarket. Pick the broker by the other operators you want beside it.
